The epicentre was just north of Alicante

An earthquake measuring a magnitude of 2.8 was felt today (Tuesday 31 December) between Alicante and Albacete. According to the National Geographic Institute the quake occurred at 4:29 am, causing only superficial damage.

The epicenter was the town of Albacete Caudete, just north of Alicante, where residents say they heard a noise but saw very little damage.

A spokesman from the Policia Locale confirmed the time of the earthquake but said that as it was so early in the morning many residents slept through it. He explained that he was up and getting ready to go to work at which time he felt a loud noise, which lasted only a few seconds. It was over almost as quickly as it had begun.

Police said that they recorded a number of calls from anxious residents, some of which, because of the loud noises, thought that their properties were being robbed. When they were told that they had witnessed a minor earthquake they seemed relieved that any impending threat had gone.
