Alicante Airport

The death of a 5 month old baby on the luggage carousel at Alicante airport in September was “totally random” and “not attributable to the installation”, but the fault of those responsible for the child.

The accident took place on the morning of September the 19th at Alicante airport, when a couple who had arrived from the U.S. with their two children, one five months old and the other of an undetermined age, apparently left the baby on the luggage carousel, which subsequently started and resulted in the tragic loss of life.

The statement has been made in response to a parliamentary question raised by Ricardo Sixto of the Izquierda Plural, who asked what measures had been taken to ensure that “accidents like this are not repeated”.

The executive committee responded by saying that, “The accident was entirely unfortunate and not attributable to the installation, designed for the passage of luggage and not for the movement of people and that according to the information available, it was due to neglect of those who were in charge of the child”.

The statement also states that all baggage collection facilities in Spain, “comply with all current regulations”, and that “maintenance is done properly”, and elements “complying with UNE-EN 619 safety in conveyor systems”.

The Government also discard the suggestion to have the carousels fitted with additional safety equipment that could activate if small weights are detected.
