Members of the community involved in Torrevieja´s Ciudad de Oviedo infant and primary school have called for a protest march to take place on Wednesday the 23rd of January, opposing the closure of the centre.

The planned protest will leave the school gates at 16:30, making its way to the Plaza de la Constitución, ultimately ending outside the Town Hall, with teachers, parents and children all expected to take part.

The school representatives have presented arguments against the closure in December, and have now gained the support of the Izquierda Unida group in Torrevieja who support their complaints.

Vicente Henarejos, who represents education in the IU, explained that the closure of the school would involve the “undoubted loss of jobs that are no longer required”, mostly by amalgamating students into larger class sized groups at other schools.

Parents are also unhappy about the lack of information from the town hall, as well as issues relating to transport, dining and text books.

The school had been operating largely out of “temporary” portacabin units, but was set to close as part of previously reported promises to reduce the number of these types of classes, by creating larger groups.

Henarejos concluded by stating that the Izquierda Unida “support the demonstration”, and encourage the public to show support for the school while recalling that “El Acequión school was built after a demonstration organized by the AMPA and supported by all political forces in the town government team including the City of Torrevieja”.
