Racing In February- The Betfair Hurdle

With February the last month before the 2014 Cheltenham Festival, it is the last chance for several horses, owners and jockeys to get in their final runs before the big event. Due to the attraction of Cheltenham, many owners also choose to rest their horses and save them for the festival, and due to this February can be quite limited in its big events.

However, there are still a number of races for punters to look forward to across February, taking place at some of Britain’s biggest racecourses. With most of these big races being trial races for events at Cheltenham, the eventual winners will have festival glory in their sites, and with Coral horse racing odds will be available and up to date in the lead up to Cheltenham.

The main event of February, the Betfair Hurdle, will take place on February 8th at Newbury. In 2014’s event, Irving and Irish Saint share favouritism with Coral at 7/1. A host of horses follow these two in the betting, with some top class national hunt racers including Rolling Star, Cheltenian, Quick Jack, and Gilgamboa all available at 10/1. The Betfair Hurdle should prove to be an extremely exciting race and punters will hope for clues heading into Cheltenham.

The Ascot Chase

The Ascot Chase usually proves to be an exciting race, with many entrants going on to race at the Cheltenham Festival. The race is seen as a trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the biggest race of the entire festival, although due to its distance of 2 miles 5 ½ furlongs, can also see a number of entrants go on to the Ryanair Chase. In 2012, Riverside Theatre won both the Betfair Hurdle and then the Ryanair Chase at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival. In the 2014 Ascot Chase, Monbeg Dude currently shades favouritism.

Other February Races

Throughout February there are other exciting races which will give us clues going into the Cheltenham Festival. These races include several Grade 1 & 2 races, and will see top class competitors enter. On 1st February the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase takes place, with Oscar Whisky a heavy favourite.

Another top class race takes place on 22nd February, with the Kempton Park Chase. Some high class entrants include On His Own, Triolo Dalene, Bury Parade, and Captain Chris in a field that is sure to entertain. Punters may be forgiven for having their sights set a month down the line a Cheltenham, but there is some top class racing to come yet.
