The town hall are still keen to point out that the newly opened civic centre on the Orihuela Costa may is available to community groups looking for premises to hold regular meetings, and welcome formal applications from associations who may be interested. Meanwhile, the reading point has taken delivery of 6 boxes of brand new books in Spanish, purchased by the department of culture, in order to extend their service further. Notice boards have been installed and the council are looking at providing other official facilities such as gym glasses in the purpose built mirrored room, which they hope will be made available soon, even being offered free of charge to the over 65 year age group.
The footbridge over the N-332 at La Regia is still on target for opening in a matter of weeks, with all plans continuing to close the N-332 on Monday night to allow the main structure to be lowered into place over the road. Similarly, work on the other bridges is still continuing without incident and in time for opening shortly too.
A meeting has been held this week between the councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, the councillor and technicians from urban planning, along with their equivalents from the town hall of San Miguel, in the hope of starting a process of re-categorising properties that currently fall on the boundary line between the municipalities. Initially, the teams are looking at some 68 properties in one area, with the plan to split the area into a more logical group of properties, with each town hall obtaining an equal number of homes, whilst at the same time taking steps to try to legalise properties which have been built on land not classed as being for the purpose of residential homes.

The Councillor for Tourism, Rosa Martínez, has announced the investment of 18,699 euro which will be spent on promoting Orihuela on 10 billboards in five municipalities in the provinces of Alicante and Murcia. The new posters will appear in key locations to promote the benefits of the municipality and will shortly be erected in Benidorm, Alicante, Gran Alacant, Elche, Murcia and Cartagena. Describing the reason for the adverts, Martínez said, “This is to give visibility to Orihuela”, before explaining that the contract will run for a period of six months, in “strategic locations”, in order to promote the “Orihuela brand” and the “History of the Mediterranean”.
The councillor for tourism, Rosa Martínez, has announced that a professional theatre group from Elche has been contracted, for the sum of 7,899 euro, to provide scripted and performed guided tours around Orihuela between April and September. Six performers will cover some twelve dramatised routes, dressed in period costume and acting in the roles which bring the guides to life, complete with props, music and sound system provided. With tickets going on sale for 10 euro, each group has a capacity for 50 people, from which the majority of the costs should be recuperated.
The Orihuela Costa municipal sports centre, the CDM, has announced details of a “Spring School” that will be available to youngsters during the Easter holidays. Specifically available between the 22nd and 28th of April, between 9 am and 2pm, the facility will provide expert tuition in activities such as soccer, swimming, tennis and more, with bi-lingual instructors speaking both Spanish and English, allowing parents to carry on with their normal working or everyday activities whilst the children are entertained in a fun and healthy way at the CDM.
The government of Orihuela has announced the provision of 15,461.55 euro which is being divided into grants to assist 68 local families who are suffering financial hardship. Government spokesperson, Carolina Gracia, made the announcement in the city hall, where she explained how they have also transferred 225,000 euro to the cultural department of the municipality, of which 65,000 euro is spent on programming and the rest to pay the salaries of employees. In addition, 85,317.88 euro was paid for the lease of vehicles used in municipal waste collection, 278,530.10 euro to Iberdrola in electricity bills, as well as other minor payments and grants to a variety of projects.
