It is not only the UK and Ireland that are being affected by severe weather conditions at the moment. Just days ago the third snowstorm in a week was pushing the East Coast of the United States to the brink with a total of 28 inches of snow falling on Central Park in the first 10 days of the month, making it New York’s second snowiest February on record behind only February 2010.

The relentless snowfall has led to critical shortages of rock salt to melt the snow in Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey but all that is about to be eased with the departure from Torrevieja last Wednesday of the vessel "Sakura Kobe" loaded with 28,000 tons of rock salt.

This is understood to be the first occasion for very nearly 20 years that a ship ladened with salt has left these waters bound for the USA. At 180 meters in length and 28 in width, the "Sakura Kobe" arrived from Alicante. When it departed from the Pier de la Sal last week, bound for the port of Baltimore, 300 miles south of New York, it was eased out of Torrevieja waters by the harbor pilot boat and a tug.

According to the consignee Álvaro Rodríguez she is one of the largest vessel to use the port of Torrevieja in the last five years.
