WARNING OVER COSMETIC CONTACT LENSES

The president of the Spanish college of opticians, Juan Carlos Martínez Moral of the Consejo General de Colegios de Ópticos-Optometristas, has warned this week that the improper use of cosmetic contact lenses can cause corneal damage and eye infections.

The warning has been issued in preparation for the upcoming carnival celebrations across Spain, when many people choose to wear dramatic lenses to enhance their costumes. Martínez Moral also warns that these products are often sold in “unauthorized establishments” where there is “no control or guarantee of security”.

Therefore, the medical professional has urged caution as cosmetic lenses must meet “the same requirements and parameters that corrective lenses adhere to, and so must be tailored by a professional optometrist in a recognised health facility for optics”

“Only an optometrist can assess whether a patient is suitable for the use of contact lenses and correctly determine if the patient can wear them without causing eye problems”, said Martínez Moral.

Signs and symptoms of concern can be the sensation of dryness and grittiness in the eyes, redness, irritation and even pain when removing the lens.

The risks associated with this misuse may be conjunctivitis, corneal inflammation, allergic reactions, corneal abrasion resulting from poor adaptation and loss of vision.
