From Monday the 3rd of March, children under four years of age must be in possession of a ticket in order to travel on mid and long distance trains in Spain.

The ticket for travel will be free, as long as the child does not occupy a seat, and will be issued with an association to the main traveller, sharing the ticket number and with an allocated place.

The move is one of the measures to improve rail safety being implemented by the Minister of Development, Ana Pastor, announced after the Santiago de Compostela train crash in July, 2013.

The child must present the ticket, along with the accompanying traveller, at control points, and will become mandatory from September.
