La Manga Club is playing its part in helping nurture the future stars of English cricket after hosting the Tom Maynard Trust Academy as part of a warm weather pre-season tour.

Spain’s flagship resort hosted a 40-over match where 11 of the country’s elite and emerging cricketers from eight professional county teams faced a select Spanish XI as part of their pre-season preparations.

The academy was set up in Tom’s name following his tragic death in 2012 and is coached by his father – ex-Glamorgan and England star Matthew Maynard. It supports young cricketers making their way in the game through the provision of financial support and education to help guide players through a career in sport.

After electing to bat first, the Tom Maynard Trust XI posted a total of 227 for 9 including 57 from Warwickshire’s Jon Webb. There were strong bowling performances from Spain’s Ravi Panchal (3 for 41) and Farhat Mahmood (3 for 19).

The Select XI had high hopes of reaching their target but the pace of England’s elite youth players proved too much and the Spanish side could only manage 177 all out in reply.

Andy House, the event organiser from Sport Europe, said: “Credit has to be given to the Spanish side. To get within 50 runs of such strong opponents shows the significant progress Spanish cricket has made.

“We received some excellent feedback from the trust academy. They were grateful to face opposition of such a high standard to ensure that a good work out was had at the end of a week of intense training in Almeria.”

The Tom Maynard Trust Academy is the latest team to take advantage of the first-class facilities that make La Manga Club the premier sports and leisure destination in Europe.

County and international teams regularly use the award-winning venue as a warm-weather training base, and the addition of the two regulation club turf pitches and four full-length nets has helped to cement the resort’s standing as the ‘home of cricket in Spain’.

Boasting an average 300 days’ sun a year, the Mediterranean climate makes it possible to train outdoors in the sunshine all-year round and La Manga Club also stages a series of popular Cricket España junior cricket academies during school holidays.

La Manga Club’s outstanding sports facilities are just part of the overall attraction of Europe’s number one sport and leisure resort. Three 18-hole championship golf courses, a 28-court tennis centre and a 2,000sqm spa complex are just some of the facilities on offer in addition to more than 20 restaurants and bars and a five-star hotel.
