The president of the Valencian Government, Alberto Fabra, has expressed concern over the tension in Russia which he cites as the reason for the cancelation of this week’s official visit to the Russian Tourism Fair.
In an interview with RNE, Radio Nacional de España, he said that the situation in the Crimea seemed to be deteriorating by the day and the cancellation of his visit was especially disappointing as the encouragement of Russians visiting this part of Spain was especially necessary for the continued improvement in the Valencian economy, the Russian market being the one to have shown the largest increase in recent years.
He did say that despite the cancellation of his visit the region will still be represented at the fair.
He said that it is important that the West unites in its condemnation of the current measures being taken by Putin and that in his view that lack of support must be reflected in the non-presence of people from the West at the fair.
However despite the boycott Fabra expressed his confidence in the Russian market saying : "Russian tourists know what we have to offer in Spain and, especially, in the Valencian Region and I am sure that if they have a choice they will still come here. "
