Ponce required emergency surgery at Valencia Infirmary

The first serious injury to a bullfighter occurred at the opening of the Feria de Fallas on Tuesday at the Plaza de Valencia when 43 bullfighter Enrique Ponce was injured by a bull from the Victoriano del Rio in Madrid.

Ponce suffered a severe goring which broke his collarbone and several ribs. He was carried out of the arena by his assistant bullfighter Mariano de la Viña.

Ponce, a product of the Escuela Taurina de Valencia, and one of the most famous bullfighters in the country, has performed for over 10 years. He is the first torero in history to fight more than 2000 corridas. He passed the mark in Ronda on September 4, 2010.

Fernando Carbonell, the attendant surgeon at the Valencia bullring said that Ponce had been quite fortunate that the wound was quite clean and that it hadn’t pierced an artery. It is thought that following yesterday’s operation at the Valencia Infirmary, where he was in theatre for almost 4 hours, he will now be transferred to the Valencia Health Clinic where he will continue his recovery.
