The Mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, has announced that 203 new posts within the Municipal Police will be created, with a more restrictive selection process than usual, as these officers will have to display multilingual skills in order to communicate better with foreigners.
Botella made the announcement during a visit to a police dog section this week, explaining how the police have been unable to promote recruitment since the start of the crisis, but this drive is being seen as of vital importance in appealing to the tourism sector.
Botella also said that negotiations with union leaders had already taken place, ensuring that the plans can progress without problems. Botella also announced how a percentage of roles will be reserved for those leaving the armed forces.
As part of the next selection process, language proficiency will be a test element, with a particular focus on English, French, German, Italian and Chinese, although any knowledge of other languages is seen as “fundamental” in today´s world.
The Municipal Police in Madrid has 6,331 members and is proud of having a ratio of one officer per 500 people, and although “working for excellence in safety is a priority”, according to the Mayor, it is “fundamental for attracting tourism and investment and a priority for an economically dynamic capital”.
In 2013, more than 15,000 people were brought to justice by the Police, who also dealt with over 45,000 complaints relating to alcohol in public, more than 5% of the population of the city has been subjected to a breathalyzer test and crime overall continues to decline.
