POLICE OFFICER KILLED IN EMERGENCY CALL SMASH

An officer of the Spanish National Police has been killed whilst attending an emergency call in A Coruña.

Andrés Ramón Boado Paz, aged 54, was driving a marked police Nissan vehicle, accompanied by his partner Alfredo Roel Gabaldón, called to attend a fight that had broken out, where the presence of knives had been warned, during an illegal street party, a botellón, in the university campus.

The incident occurred at 02:05, when the police car, with lights flashing and siren sounding, collided with a Citroën C4 at a junction. The impact of the crash overturned the police vehicle onto its roof. The C4 meanwhile then collided with another vehicle, which had stopped.

Alfredo Roel Gabaldón was thrown from the vehicle and lay in the road, whereas Andrés Ramón Boado Paz remained trapped inside, and died instantly as a result of the crash.

The initial analysis at the scene was that the C4 had jumped the red lights and the driver was thought to be drunk. However, both of these claims were dismissed by the judge investigating the case, who states that there is no evidence to suggest either fact to be true. The driver of the car stated that when he arrived at the junction, the lights were on red, and so he stopped his car. He observed the patrol car approaching and it was the police vehicle that struck his car, which was stopped at the time of impact.

Alfredo Roel Gabaldón remains in a serious condition in the ICU of the Hospital A Coruña. Andrés Ramón Boado Paz was buried on Friday in the Présaras cemetery in Vilasantar.
