In Alicante´s plenary meeting this week, the Partido Popular majority has once again blocked the proposal for a shuttle bus between the railway station in the city and the coastal towns of Torrevieja and Benidorm.
In the meeting on Wednesday chaired by Andrés Llorens, on account of mayor Sonia Castedo being off work for maternity leave, the councillor for transport, Juan Seva, reiterated the opposition to the bus link on the grounds of refusing to allow those from outside the city to dictate what they decide, whilst also commenting that “almost 80% of users of the high speed trains” go to Alicante and its region, and only “20% goes to other municipalities”.
A survey of train passengers revealed that 79% of travellers are city and metropolitan based, whereas 21% goes to the rest of the province. Of those who travel outside the city confines, around 55% in the summer and 37% in the winter go south of the province. In terms of the most popular locations, 18% of the lesser group go to Benidorm and 12% go to Torrevieja.
Three different taxi association representatives were also present in the meeting, and expressed their concern that the buses might cause gridlock in the city.
An alternative proposal which may be discussed would be a connecting shuttle bus which runs from the train station to the bus station in Alicante, thus providing the necessary link to the network already operating. Meanwhile, RENFE are still advertising the operation of a connecting bus link from other towns such as Santa Pola.
