TWO BEACHSIDE PROPERTIES DEMOLISHED IN GUARDAMAR

The bulldozer moves in

Two beachside properties were demolished last week but on this occasion both with the agreement of the owners.

The buildings on la Playa de Babilonia were in a state of ruin, both abandoned and impossible to refurbish so the Provincial Directorate of Coasts came to an agreement with the owners to proceed with the controlled demolition.

And so the gentle sound of the waves lapping up onto the beach and the squawking of seagulls was suddenly cut short on Monday to make way for a noisy bulldozer that had both properties torn down in a fraction of the time that they had taken to erect some 50 years earlier.

A coastal official said that both seafront houses were likely to fall down at any time and as such they were a constant danger to members of the public.

They could not be rebuilt because of both current legislation and the fact that they were so close to the sea so the only course of action was their demolition.
Those residents who still live in the adjacent properties and who struggle to keep their homes in a habitable condition watched with awe as the demolition took place.

The City of Guardamar del Segura say they have spent years trying to find a solution to this problem which, at times resembles the city of Venice, as the Mediterranean waters lap up to the front doors of the properties.

The City Council congratulated the Provincial Directorate of Coasts on their action because the poor state of these homes are "one of the images that damages Guardamar beach”.

They believe that their demolition benefits the tourist image of the town.

"Tourism is the economic engine of our city and to have a beach on which people can enjoy the sand and the sea without the danger of dilapidated buildings is paramount to this activity,” said Jesus Huertas said yesterday, Councillor for Works.
