Isabel Carrasco

Leading Partido Popular member of León, Isabel Carrasco, has been shot dead in public on her way to the party offices from her home on Monday.

Born in 1955, the former delegate of the PP board, ex-councillor for finance of the regional government and the provincial President of the PP was a leading female figure in politics.

Not without controversy in her career, Carrasco appeared in court for allegedly rigging contracts in the province of León, as well as being named in a number of corruption cases, as well as being accused of taking numerous salaries for a variety of political roles at the same time, earning her the nickname of the “woman of thirteen salaries”.

Supporters have spoken of a “strong and indomitable character”, and spoken of warmly by those around her.

Witnesses report that the politician was shot three times as she walked along a footbridge. Initial indications from the scene claim that a former female employee of the council, who was recently sacked, and her daughter, have both been arrested in connection with the incident.

The city of León is the capital of the province of the same name and is located in the northwest of Spain. With a registered population of 131,680, it is the largest municipality in the province, accounting for more than one quarter of the province’s population.
