HISTORIC CANONS RECOVERED FROM SCRAP YARD

The Guardia Civil of Murcia have delivered two canons to the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Cartagena, one from the late eighteenth and the other from the early nineteenth century, as well as three pieces of Roman times, which were recovered from a junkyard and warehouse.

This project, conducted in collaboration with the Heritage Service of the Region of Murcia, has resulted in one person facing criminal charges for the alleged crime of misappropriation, after an investigation was launched following information provided by various concerned citizens who thought the artefacts were of historic value.

The investigation led officers to a waste disposal firm, where they discovered the items and various others which were being sold, without relevant documentation to confirm ownership.

The assistance of historians was then used to ascertain the age of these pieces, thus finally concluding that the person who had them had no right to offer them for sale.

The guns and the artefacts were deposited in the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Cartagena to keep them safe and prevent spoilage while ownership is determined.
