The extraction

The Spanish coast guard carried out a helicopter extraction of a British passenger from on board the ferry “Pont –Aven” bound for Santander on Monday, after a call to a medical emergency.

Helimer 218 was dispatched from the base at Santander to an area about 95 nautical miles to the northwest of Cabo Mayor.

The ship had called for assistance after the passenger had fractured four fingers on his left hand, apparently after a fall.

The call was made to the French rescue coordination centre, who in turn contacted the Spanish Salvamento Marítimo, who carried out the successful operation.

The injured passenger was taken to the hospital de Valdecilla.
