The National Squad that travelled to Cyprus

Athena Beach Hotel, Cyprus – 21st to 25th April 2014………I was fortunate to be selected as Player /Manager for the second 4 Nations Bowls Tournament hosted by Bowls Cyprus, the venue this year was the fabulous Athena Beach Hotel, truly a great bowling venue although some of the greens now need some remedial work on the bases to maintain the hotel’s high standing in world bowls.

Having just missed out on winning last year we were all determined to go one better this time round and with our team of :
Men : Jackie Breslin, Pete Bonsor, Steve Cantley, Steve Pearson and Graham Cathcart.
Ladies : Sheri Fletcher, Lisa Bonsor, Yvonne Brydon, Debbie Colqhoun and Jan Dando.
We were all fairly confident as we left Alicante airport.

There were 3 different disciplines Ladies Team, Men’s Team and Overall Team.

After day 1 overall we were sitting 2rd, 2pts behind Israel, however our ladies continued their great team performances they had shown over the last year and were already 5 points clear, winning both pairs and both triples games.

Our ladies continued to show their class, winning 2 pairs games and all 3 triples games on day 2, our men were still not performing to expectation only picking up 5 out of 12 points available but hopes were high that we would finish strongly.

The ladies had lost only 1 of the 10 games played and were running away with their team discipline after the pairs and triple events.

Moving on to the singles and rinks on day 3 with Jan playing singles and Sheri

skipping the rink of Debbie, Lisa and Yvonne the ladies had no intention of letting their form slip and won all 4 games. The form of our men did not improve only picking up 1 win in the rinks skipped by Pete with Jackie playing singles.

Overall going into the last day we were sitting joint top with Israel with a 20 shots advantage, our ladies to their credit had already won their discipline, so all to play for.

The final day could not have been better with us playing Israel for the overall team gold, Israel like our ladies had won the men’s event with a day to spare.
So, with everything to play for I decided to make a change to the format of the men’s team with Pete playing singles and me moving over to skip the rinks, this seemed to work with Pete winning and the rinks close at 9 all after 9 ends but failed to win another end, so could our ladies continue their winning ways?

Because of our superior shot difference 1 more win would do us, but our ladies were having none of it winning both games handsomely.

This crowned an excellent tournament with the Ladies winning Gold and Gold overall for the team, medals and cups were presented at the Gala dinner.

A big thank you goes to Bowls Cyprus for their organization and hopefully we can return next year to defend the title.

Just to finish I would like to thank John Muldoon, our National Director and all the other supporters who travelled.

Jackie Breslin, Team manager
