Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba

Following the results of the European Elections in Spain, which the ruling PP saw an incredible drop in support, the main opposition, the socialist PSOE, ought to have gathered up their losses, but also suffered a considerable reduction, resulting in the head of the PSOE, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, deciding to step down.

The PSOE Federal Executive Committee agreed at its meeting this morning to convene an extraordinary congress for the 19th and 20th of July in order to elect a new head of the party to try to turn round opinion before the next elections in May.

Appearing at a press conference today, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, the current Secretary General, described the outcome of the elections as both “unmitigated evil” and “very worrying”.

He continued, “When you get these results, it is the responsibility of the party leadership and particularly the Secretary General”, whilst answering questions as to why he has not immediately stepped down as his “responsibility ends when the new general secretary is appointed”, which he described as the “responsible thing to do”.

Spain will see both National and local elections next year. Based on the votes of the European elections, without a drastic change in direction and policy implementation, the smaller groups will continue to thrive at the expense of the two main parties who have dominated politics throughout.
