AIRLINES HITTING BACK WITH TICKET PRICE WAR

Recognising the increasing threat of the high speed train between Madrid and Alicante, Spanish airline Iberia Express has launched a pocket friendly fair on the route, at just 39 euro each way in the peak season between June and September.

With 3 daily departures, the price is for a walk-on passenger without check-in luggage, but is the equivalent price of an economy class train journey. Other low cost carriers also announced a deal this week, offering round trip tickets for under 70 euro, whereas other airlines are currently charging between 90 and 170 euro each way for the service, though likely to react in a similar way soon.

That said, as the train tickets for the new service were released this week, early bookers were able to take advantage of an even bigger saving, with certain tickets on a number of days, and with certain restrictive condition, being offered up for grabs at just 19,99 euro each way.

The Spanish airport authority, AENA, had already warned of the severe impact the train service would have on airlines, with a loss of 300,000 passengers between June and December last year, the announcement of faster and more trains would only serve to amplify those losses unless flying became competitive once again.

Experts are commenting that the growth in both rail and air passenger numbers is one of the most positive signs of economic recovery displayed, as this is not just comments from politicians eager to convince us that the future is getting brighter, but is the result of direct action by consumers.

Either way, with an ever increasing opportunity for travel and a price war already starting, it can only prove better news for those consumers who now have the biggest and fastest choice between the two key areas than ever before.
