THIRD PEGASUS RADAR HELICOPTER LAUNCHED

The third Pegasus equipped helicopter of Spain´s traffic department, the DGT, has taken to the skies this week, looking for speeding motorists.

With twelve helicopters in their arsenal against speed, the primary cause of death on major roads, this third to be equipped with the airborne radar speed detector will primarily be focusing on the areas of Galicia, Castilla y León, Asturias and Cantabria in the northwest of the country, although can easily cover other roads as necessary.

Like its predecessors, this third Pegasus can capture the speed of vehicles, besides other offenses detected from the air, thanks to a mechanism and software included in the surveillance camera incorporated into the traffic helicopters.

Groundbreaking at the time, the Pegasus radar began operating in March of 2013, and has completed over 500 flying hours, checked 9,960 vehicles and clocked 1,778 drivers exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 kilometres per hour above the allowed speed on the roads.

As well as hefty fines, Pegasus has taken away a total of 1,360 points from drivers for speeding, and during the 15 months of operation managed to catch one driver travelling at 232 kilometres per hour on a road where the limit was 120.
