KING JUAN CARLOS OF SPAIN TO ABDICATE

The President of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, has announced that the King of Spain, Juan Carlos de Borbon, is to abdicate.

Prince Felipe will take over as the ruler of the country.

King Juan Carlos, who is 76, has ruled since 1975 and faced a recent wave of controversy from corruption cases in his family, criticism for shooting elephants and has been suffering ill health for some time.

In his early life, Juan Carlos was also involved in a case in which his brother was killed, apparently whilst the pair were playing with a gun, with Juan Carlos being thought responsible for the death.
