The new office for dealing with immigration and residential papers by the National Police has opened on calle Arquitecto Larramendi in Torrevieja, albeit not with the promised increase in staff.
The office is covered by one inspector, two police officers and two assistants, the exact same number as when the office was located near the windmill on the plaza del Molino.
It was in July of last year that the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, met with officials at the site in order to finalise plans for the new office, designed to provide “comprehensive care to both foreign and Spanish citizens”.
The new office promised around three times the amount of space over the old one, and at the time the announcement was made that this would also allow for staffing to be “doubled” at the centre, as well as being hailed as an important move for international residents in the area, who will no longer have to travel to Elche or Alicante for processing their NIE applications.
Despite the obvious cost in the move, quite why the staffing has not been increased is yet to be announced, but with the threat of Torrevieja about to potentially have 15,000 residents wiped from the census, the long promised building of a full and functioning National Police station in the city is looking like an ever increasingly distant broken promise.
