TORREVIEJA POLICE ASK FOR DIALOGUE TO BE OPENED

The syndicated unions of the Local Police in Torrevieja have announced that they have approached the Mayor, Eduardo Dolón, with a view to opening dialogue between the two sides and trying to resolve the long running disputes between the officers of the force and the town hall.

The group, who represent 80% of the workforce, want to make their complaints and claims clear, so as to avoid any further ambiguity in their attempts to resolve such matters as shift pattern changes which have left the city without police coverage at times, as well as holidays and legally required breaks between shifts.

A number of officers have staged protests during the monthly plenary meetings, as they try to encourage open dialogue, some of these protests have met with disciplinary action and threats of fines, thus aggravating the matter further.

The officers have also hit back at suggestions that they are operating a “work to rule” policy, saying that it is not the case, whereas they have been blamed for taking prompt action against illegally parked vehicles and urban infractions against bars and restaurants, which some see as a violation and abuse of their powers, whilst others, including the officers, see it as them simply upholding the law and fulfilling their duties as police officers.
