SPAIN ON ALERT IN PREPARATION FOR NEW KING

As a number of protests in support of a republican have been banned by the government during the proclamation of Filipe VI, some 7,000 police officers will be looking after the security during the proceedings.

Of the 7,000 officers assigned to the duty on the day, 4,300 are National Police, and 2,672 are Guardia Civil.

According to the Interior Ministry, the reason for the “full and comprehensive” deployment is to “ensure the safety” of those involved. Meanwhile, the terrorist alert level has also been raised from level 2 to level 3.

Although the main events will be held on Thursday, the deployment began on Monday morning, led from the CEMAN Command Centre.

Of the officers deployed, which the ministry has described as “most complex”, 2,100 of them are highly trained riot police, 36 are explosives experts, there are 20 cavalry officers, 23 dog units and 32 who specialise in subterranean activities.

The Guardia Civil will also deploy a Subsurface Reconnaissance Unit, air support, a Cavalry Squadron, explosives and dog experts, as well as specialists in traffic and public safety.

The secret services are currently monitoring known anarchist groups, observing any signs of plans for disturbances or trouble, using specialist officers who have previously worked on Barcelona Olympics and the World Expo of 1992 in Seville.

Of the four levels relating to the plan for prevention and protection against terrorism, which was launched in Spain in March 2005, Level 3 involves the activation of the special intervention units and allows the state security forces to monitor places of a mass influx of people and the protection of critical infrastructure. Level 3 also provides the ability to restrict access to places such as airports or nuclear power plants, which can be viewed as potential threats to infrastructure.

However, the ministry also wish to make it clear that there is no known threat to the proceedings, the reason for the additional action is purely for preventative reasons, although they do feel that there is a risk of organised, though mostly peaceful, protests.

Meanwhile, as much of the country is celebrating the news of a new king, for the residents of the small Valencia village of Horno de Alcedo, there is even more reason to celebrate than most. A town with a population of around 1,300 people, 5 of those residents employed by a small plastics company have had to work almost flat out for just over a week, as they are manufacturing 120,000 flags which will line the streets as the new monarch travels through Madrid to take his role as the new head of state.
