SPANISH AIRPORT OPERATOR TO BE PRIVATISED

The Minister for Public Works, Ana Pastor, has announced that the Spanish government aims to privatise the airport network company AENA, by offloading 49% of the company to the private sector.

In a statement, Mata stressed that AENA will continue to be a public entity, and will remain as a majority holding of 51%, saying that , “The government will maintain the majority stake in AENA and the state will remain the holder of the majority on the Board of Directors of AENA Airports.”

Of the 49% share on offer, 28% will be placed on the stock market, sold as an Oferta Pública de Venta, the remaining 21% to be tendered to a stable core of shareholders to be selected by public and concurrency competition.

Pastor noted that AENA Airports is the largest airport operator in the world in terms of passenger numbers, and is now profitable for the first time, reaching a net profit of 597 million euro. In 2013, the network carried 187.4 million passengers, marking a record of the history of Spanish civil aviation.

The presence of private investors, according to the minister, will strengthen the management of the company, ensuring the future sustainability of the Spanish airport system, saying, “The increased efficiency of AENA will be a stimulus to the air transport sector in Spain and linked strategic sectors, such as tourism and trade, and encourage the international development of the company”.

Pastor also noted that AENA receives no money from the state budget and relies on the income earned by its trade policy and tariffs. It has also announced that it will increase airport charges next year and has advanced the adoption of a regulatory framework establishing a five-year policy of monitoring the conditions and levels of service quality and the pricing framework.
