MERCADONA UNDER FIRE FROM CHARITY FOR THE NEEDY

Popular Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona, famed for looking after its staff and offering cheap, no-frills groceries to consumers, has come under fire from a charity which provides breakfasts to needy families and children over their delivery charge policy.

Inés García de Paco, president of the Asociación Menuda Vida de Perros, explains that the “No Breakfast” project is aimed at those families who are struggling to find food during these trying economic times, and so they send food parcels to those who qualify.

However, for every consignment they send, Mercadona charges them 7,21 euro, which, if the supermarket chain were to waiver, would mean that the association would be able to provide even more food for families.

“My association is small”, Inés explains, and with “very limited resources”, but “if Mercadona didn´t charge me money every time I send a car, a little more could help more families”.

A petition to put pressure on Mercadona has been set up on the change.org website, already with around 10,000 supporting signatories.

In March of this year, Mercadona announced that from their near 20 billion euro turnover, net profit registered in 2013 was 515 million euro, a 1% increase on 2012, equivalent to 2.9% of sales.
