Twice married, Queen Letizia

The Spanish gossip magazine Diez Minutos (or, Ten Minutes) has had its knuckles rapped following the publication of an “imaginary interview” with the country’s new queen, Letizia and has now been told that it could face further disciplinary action.

The interview was published in the May 28 edition of the magazine when Letizia was still Princess of Asturias. A complaint from the Murcia Association of Journalists, described the story, as a “discredit” to journalism that breached “the general principles of professional ethics.”

In its response, however, Diez Minutos said that its interview was simply what the writer considered an imagined chat would be like with her, and interview with the replies that she might be expected to give.

The magazine say that they used reliable sources and checked information, from which they recreated the conversation that could have taken place in the interview.

It is understood that no complaint has been received by The Commission for Arbitration, Complaints and Ethics in Journalism, from The Royal Household but they would nevertheless consider whether her privacy had been breached by the story. “Freedom of information must be compatible with truthfulness,” said the President of the Spanish Federation of Journalists’ Associations, Manuel Núñez Encabo.
