A child, believed to be of Russian nationality and around 4 years of age, has been seriously injured after apparently falling from a statue at Benidorm´s Terra Natura animal park on Monday.
It is believed that the child was climbing on the 1.5 metre high wooden statue, which was unable to carry the weight, subsequently falling and hitting the child.
The child was taken to Alicante hospital in a serious condition. The park said that the ornamental statue was in an area where climbing was not allowed.
Meanwhile, an investigation has been launched in neighbouring Terra Mitica theme park, after an 18 year old was killed after apparently falling from a roller coaster ride.
The male was riding the Inferno roller coaster when he was apparently thrown from the ride. An emergency crew attended but could do nothing to save his life.
A full report on the incident is expected in the next few days before the courts decide how to proceed with the investigation into the tragic death.
In a statement, the management of Terra Mitica confirmed that the attraction has an official certification and was confirmed the “optimal functioning of the attraction with the highest level of security”. The certification, which was conducted by an external amusement park safety company, was conducted prior to the park opening for the summer season in April.
The park also confirmed that safety staff at the park had checked the ride on the morning of the incident, as they do every morning, and confirmed its correct operation.
According to sources involved in the investigation, “the causes of the accident are unknown”, and Terra Mitica has announced that it will continue to investigate the reasons for “such unfortunate facts”, whilst pointing out that throughout its 14 years of operation there had never been an accident of this nature before. The park management offered their condolences to the family.
