DRAINED FINANCES LEAD TO POOR VEHICLE CONDITIONS

According to data released by the DGT traffic department conducted by driving association the Observatorio Español de Conductores, the truth of what people get up to behind the wheel reveals some startling statistics.

According to the 3,000 drivers who took part in their annual survey, 11% admitted to failing to observe the speed limit on a regular basis, equating to 2.7 million drivers. In addition, over 1.8 million drives, or 7%, admit to using applications on their mobile phones whilst driving. However, on the whole, despite these results, Spanish drivers consider themselves to be largely “prudent” and “alert” to other drivers.

Although not directly involving habitual bad practice, what is also worrying is how financial restraints during the recent crisis has led to poor maintenance and repair of vehicles on the road. A staggering 70% of drivers say that they have cut back on spending on vehicle maintenance, repairs, using toll roads and insurance. Within the results of those surveyed, over 45% cut back on tolls, 40% stopped washing their cars, 36% avoided urgent repairs and 19% chose not to renew worn out tyres.

In addition, 40% of drivers questioned, around 11 million people, say that they frequently leave their car at home in order to save money, and around 6 million car owners want to upgrade to a newer model, as advised by the DGT on the grounds of safety, but they simply cannot afford to do so, despite government funded subsidies.

Of course, if the data is proven to be true, less cars on the road may not only be safer, it leads to less pollution and is better for the environment, which can also be said for the vast majority of drivers who now claim to drive in a more fuel efficient and ecologically minded manor.
