SPAIN BREAKS TOURISM RECORD

In the first six months of this year, Spain has broken its record for the number of foreign tourists visiting the country, with 28 million visitors in the first half of the year, 7.3% more than in the same period of 2013, driven by the traditional markets of the UK, Germany and France.

According to figures released this week by the tourism ministry, in total during June, there were 6,582,941 international tourists, of which 1,743,513 visitors came from the UK, an increase of 3%, with a year to date figure of 6,535,251. German visitors have increased by 10.8% in June, with 1,133,931 tourists in the month, totalling 4,658,700 in the first semester. As for France, the third place in the table, showing a significant difference from the lead two in June, there were 814,113 French tourists last month, an increase of 7%, with a six month figure of 4,239,804, closing in on Germany.

Meanwhile, once again, the biggest drop in tourism in June was from the Russian market, with a decline of 13.9% compared to the previous year, with 221,895 visitors in June, a total of 561,234 in the first six months, registering an overall drop of 4.5%. Visitors from the United States also dropped by 1.9% in June to 171,544 tourists, a 7% overall drop during the six months. Tourists from Ireland also dropped by 5.2% in June, with 173,473 visitors, a six month decline of 1.3% to 581,938.
