NO SUMMER HOLIDAY FOR HUNGER

This is just one example of how the Social Service and Educational authorities have come together

Whatever the time of the year the crisis continues to hit those families most at risk and for those with children who rely for their main meal of the day that free lunchtime school dinner the long summer holidays are a time of particular hardship.

So it comes as no surprise that many welfare organizations and NGO’s such as the Red Cross have decided to open their doors during this especial time of need.

Many of the municipalities of the Community say that they have had no alternative but to address this need with Valencia, Alicante, Elche, Benidorm and Sant Joan amongst those cities and towns that have chosen to open the doors of some school canteens so that those children at the very bottom of the social ladder can be given at least one meal a day.

In Alicante, just one example of how the Social Service and Educational authorities have come together, the staff at 14 school kitchens are working to ensure that 1200 children will get that one important meal. They are receiving assistance from la Asociación Pavirre together with the Department of Social Action, Caritas and other associations, in the Alicante district de Virgen del Remedio.

But in some of the Alicante schools the activities don’t begin and end with the free lunch because with the assistance of 15 instructors and 27 volunteers the fun often takes place throughout the entire day as the children head to a small park, to do what they do best, play. This is how the long weeks of the summer months will work out for at least some of the luckier children

We also have some morning activities which are monitored by volunteers who also dine with the children until they finish their lunch according to Miriam Chicote, one of the coordinators. “In the centre where I help out there are 184 children who are watched and attended to at all times.”

And many of them couldn’t be more grateful as, smiling, they return home with their parents, knowing that the camp is not yet over and that tomorrow there will be more adventures……and another hot meal!
