Campos and PM Rajoy

During the award last week of the Placa de Bronce for Sporting Merit to the Sanxenxo Royal Yachting Club, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that "the successes of our sport stars help portray an image of respect and admiration for Spain around the whole world"; successes which "requires perseverance and sacrifice for many years to be able to overcome obstacles that lie in our paths”.

At the ceremony, which was also attended by the President of the Regional Government of Galicia and the State Secretary for Sport, the Prime Minister acknowledged that "sport is one of my greatest passions" and remarked that he could fully identify with the values behind it: effort, perseverance, tenacity and sacrifice.

Before handing over the award to the Club President, Pedro Campos, Rajoy highlighted the work of the sports federations, clubs and associations around the country, and saying that "it is the obligation of the public authorities to extend the sports ethic to many sectors of society".

Mr Rajoy also highlighted the list of triumphs of the Royal Yachting Club, founded in 1951, which includes four gold medals, one silver medal and two diplomas from the Olympic Games; 32 World Championships, 13 European Championships, 7 King of Spain Cups, 32 national titles and many other international trophies.

He also sought to congratulate the club on having provided Spain with a sizeable number of great sports stars, including various Olympic medallists.

Earlier in the week the Prime Minster had sent a congratulatory telegram to the club chairman of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, on his team’s victory in the European Supercup. He also wrote to the President of the Spanish Athletics Federation, José María Odriozola, congratulating him on the medals won by Spanish athletes at the European Athletics Championships, shot putter Borja Vivas who took a silver and Murcia walker Miguel Ángel López who won gold in the 20km event.
