SWIMMERS PROTEST AT NEGLECT OF PLAYA BABILONIA

Over a hundred people attended the demo

Over a hundred swimmers and residents protested last week at the Guardamar council’s apathy and their continued neglect of Playa Babilonia

Many of the protesters own beach houses on the sea front of Babilonia. They say that their homes are in ruins because the Coastal Act now prevents them from carrying out any form of maintenance or improvement work.

Both children and adults carried a multitude of banners as well as beach buckets and spades with which they made as much noise as possible. The most popular slogan used, many of which were in Castilian, English and Valencian included "Save the beach!"

Protesters say that reports suggesting that the beach and dunes are suffering from erosion have not been subjected to any sort of environmental study and could well be false. They say that if such a problem does exist it is being aggravated by the jetty.

Many of the properties on the beach have been there since the 1920’s they say. They were built legally, have all of the necessary requirements and in no way present a danger to residents or to users.

The decision to allow them to decay with no opportunity to have them repaired or maintained is purely political.
