SEGUNDA NIGHTMARE CONTINUES FOR REAL MURCIA

Javier Tebas, President of the LFP

There has been much speculation this week about the future of Real Murcia, which had administrative relegation placed on it to Second Division ‘B’ for failing to meet debt and income obligations required by the statutes of La Liga.

But it finally looks as though the LFP have got their way as, after a complicated legal tussle, the league announced it would drop the club into Segunda B, Spanish football’s third division. Although as we go to press Murcia have postponed their first league fixture against UD Logrones and are still saying that they have more legal avenues to pursue.

Murcia’s crime is that it has some €35 million in debts, including €13 million it owes in back taxes to Hacienda which means that its ratio of debt to income is higher than the new league limit.

The announcement was made by the League president of Spain’s professional football league, Javier Tebas, in Madrid on Friday while 300 Murcia fans gathered outside the league headquarters chanting “This league makes us sick.”

But the president wasn’t moved. “Time has come to crack down on the league’s economic delinquents,” he said.

Of course, Murcia fans don’t feel the same way. After all, last season they almost made it into La Liga, Spain’s top tier, finishing their Segunda A season proper in 4th place and just missing out on promotion to La Liga in the playoffs, and now they are to be thrown into the purgatory that is the Spanish third division.

Inside the league nerve centre, w hile Murcia fans protested outside, Tebas talked tough about enforcing the new financial rules.

But while Tebas says quite categorically that this is the end of the saga, according to Club President Jesus Samper, nothing is further from reality, so hang on… this might get even more complicated yet…
