If you have ever wondered about pensions in Spain, and how they compare to those that many of us are in receipt of from the UK, Ireland and elsewhere, then this article may answer some of your questions as figures for the month of August were released by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security just last week.

The number of pensions that are currently being claimed in Valencia stands at 939,613, representing an increase of 1.5% over the same month last year. Of those, retirement pensions equate to 566,404 claimants, widows pensions 240,491, disability pensions, 94,794 and orphans 35,461.

The average pension in the Region is 803.46 euros, compared with the Spanish average of 872.48, also representing on last year of 1.8%.

Within the Region of Valencia, by province, the retirement pension to the 513,669 Valencia claimants averages 837.74 euros; it is almost 80 euros less at just 759.01 to the 300,665 Alicante pensioners and 769.59 euros to the 125,288 claimants who reside in Castellon.

In terms of occupations the average pension to a former coal miner is 2,004 euros, and to merchant sailors 1,162.4 euros. To those retirees who were formerly self employed the pension is just 679.5 euros.

There are many regions and provinces of course where the pension is well above the national average, the average pension paid in Basque Country (1,078.7 euros), Madrid (1,032.5 euros), Asturias (1,030.5 euros) Navarra (994.1 euros), Aragon (911.7 stood euros), Cantabria (910.9 euros) and Catalonia (902.8 euros).
