STALL CLOSURES AT LA PLASA INDOOR MARKET

Some of the stalls that have closed

Half a dozen stallholders who only recently purchased their pitches on the Torrevieja La Plasa Indoor market have closed down their businesses after just 4 months of trading.

Traders that have closed include a greengrocer who closed stopped trading two weeks ago, a company specializing in the sale of Asturian products, a deli which had moved its premises from the center of Torrevieja to La Plasa, plus a business selling confectionary and artisan chocolates. The traders told colleagues that their decisions were based on the pronouncements by the market operator that the site will close during the winter months for three evenings per week, despite what was contained in their contracts.

They were also concerned that a number of traders, particularly some fishmongers and greengrocers, have been closing their stalls during the afternoon, in breach of the current schedule that requires them to remain open and despite which the Department of Commerce has failed to take any action.

Only last week the market operators announced that they are putting out to auction 7 market stalls in La Plasa later this month. Almost certainly the decision of the six stallholders to close down their operations after only a short period in business will now devalue and bids that they might originally have expected.
