ITV have commissioned a new six part series of detective drama DCI Banks, starring Stephen Tompkinson, Andrea Lowe and Caroline Catz, ITV confirmed today. The six hour-long episodes continue to be inspired by the books written by acclaimed novelist Peter Robinson. Well renowned actors Keith Barron and Polly Hemmingway also return as Banks’ parents, Arthur and Ida. Filming will take place in Yorkshire later this month. The first story, What Will Survive, revolves around a young woman found buried alive and her connections to a man, his autistic son and a family that seem to have silenced the town. We also see Banks’ life turned upside down by tragic events in his own family.
If that´s not enough police-themed drama, ITV have also announced another four stories from Endeavour. Following the success of the second series earlier this year, the third series will once again be written by Lewis creator and Inspector Morse writer, Russell Lewis. The new series which focuses on a young Morse, will be set in 1967, picking up from the dramatic second series finale that saw Endeavour placed in police custody, framed for a murder he didn’t commit, and DI Fred Thursday’s life hanging in the balance after being shot in the chest.
RED Production Company, the creators of the often very dark, but very successful drama series Happy Valley, as well as warm and cuddly family friendly Last Tango In Halifax, have announced a first class cast for a BBC One drama series set to broadcast in 2015. Ordinary Lies is written by bafta and Emmy award winner Danny Brocklehurst, who has previously worked on such classics as The Accused and Shameless, will feature the likes of Max Beesley, former Corrie star Michelle Keegan, comedian Jason Manford and Pirates of the Caribbean star Mackenzie Crook, along with Jo Joyner, Rebecca Callard and Sally Lindsay, all starring in a thrilling and darkly humorous drama about how a simple lie can spiral out of control and change a life forever.
Actress Penelope Keith will travel through some of the most spectacular landscapes of Britain, reflecting on its rural life through the stories and experiences of the communities she meets, in a new three part series of hour long episodes for More 4, where she aims to discover whether Britain’s much-cherished villages are thriving or struggling to survive under the pressures of the 21st century.
Channel 4 will take us behind the scenes in a new series following officers at Luton Police Station as they respond to 999 calls and arrest suspects, witnessing the relentless traffic through the police custody cells, round the clock. “24 Hours in Police Custody” will show the station works under the constant pressure dictated by time restrictions which mean that most prisoners can only be kept against their will for a maximum of 24 hours.
Star of Fifty Shades of Grey, hunky Jamie Dornan, returns to the TV screens alongside Gillian Anderson, as The Fall is back in October for a second series. The first helping of the drama saw sinister plot twists a plenty, during the hunt for a brutal killer. Series 2 also sees former Merlin star Colin Morgan in a lead role, playing DS Tom Anderson. The Fall returns to BBC Two soon.
Finally, the BBC have announced that Kay Mellor’s In The Club will return for a second series next year, and on the subject of returns, albeit dragging a little nostalgia along for the ride, Alexander Armstrong is to provide the voice of Danger Mouse, whilst Kevin Eldon will be Penfold and Dave Lamb The Narrator, when the animated crime drama returns to TV next year.
