Almost 300 bowlers contested the Valencian Community Bowls Championship over the last two weeks culminating with the finals which were held at Vistabella over the weekend.

The bowlers, who competed for 7 disciplines, were drawn from very nearly 20 clubs with competition taking place at The Emerald Isle, Greenlands and of course Vistabella Bowls Clubs.

Despite the inclement weather experienced during the last week or so, Competition Secretary Fred Trigwell said that he was delighted to be able to keep to the original schedule, and although there was some bowling in the rain there were hardly any interruptions at all to inconvenience many of the competitors.

This was the first time in 2 or 3 years that many of the disciplines were contested with only the mixed triples and the mixed fours defended from 2013. But it was the Men’s and Ladies Singles that got the tournament underway with Colin Lindgren of San Luis, and Maggie Furness from Quesada the victors when last contested in 2011. Colin got his fortnight off to a fine start with victory against John Raby of San Miguel while Maggie decided not to defend her title.

Indeed Colin, who also won the competition in 2009, progressed through to the Men’s Single final where he met Frank Close of the Emerald Isle. Unfortunately that was where the wheels came off as Colin, having held the lead throughout, dropped away in the final 3 ends to lose to Frank 21-17.

Although Frank almost threw the match away on the 15th end, where he turned a 3 shot advantage into a 1 shot deficit with his final bowl of the end, the newcomer stood firm to achieve his first major success in Spain, having only recently arrived onto the local bowling scene.

There was a similar tight battle in the Ladies Singles final contested by 2009 winner Anita Brown of San Miguel and Quesada’s recent arrival Jacqui Johnston where the new girl let slip an 8-0 advantage. Anita clawed back to 9-9 before going on to win 21-17.

Colin Lindgren and Keith Jones of San Luis held onto their Mens Pairs title beating Jim Mulloy, and Geoff Farrington of the Emerald Isle 22-19 while in the Ladies Pairs Avril Toozer and Sue Mohamet beat Lynn Greenland and Sheila Stead 19-14 in an all Greenlands affair.

Other winners:

Mixed Pairs: Jim Manning, Kathy Manning (La Marina) 22-12 Charlie Watkins, Lin Watkins (Vistabella)

Mixed Triples: Alan Campbell, N Campbell, John Marshall (San Miguel) 13-12 Richard Lee, Stuart Allman, Jenny Bowman (Vistabella)

Mixed Fours: Eric Bishop, Les Barber, C Watkins, Lynne Bishop (Vistabella) 25-5 Guiseppi Galelli, Paul Parkes, Jean Parkes, Kathy Reid (San Luis)

Led by Valencian Delegate Bob Donnelly the small committee of Fred Trigwell, Pam Lockett and June Jones can be very proud of their organisation and hard work in making this Championship a success. Together with the organizers at the three host clubs, they have done a wonderful job in pulling the tournament together and everyone involved fully deserves the congratulations meted out on them by the FEB President, Don Oscar Gomez Morante.

The trophies and medals were presented by the Orihuela Councillor for Sport, Luis Galiano, together with sponsors and Club Presidents.

Thanks also to the competition sponsors, Rightmove Insurance, Carrasco Consulting, The Emerald Isle, The Leader Newspaper and Vistabella Golf.
