The Government of Spain strongly condemns the brutal and cowardly murder of the British aid worker Alan Henning at the hands of the self-proclaimed terrorists "Islamic State of Iraq and Levant", that took place on Friday.
At this time of great dismay, the Spanish Government expresses its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, and to the authorities and people of Great Britain and hopes that the perpetrators of this crime will be brought to justice.
Spain similarly appeals for the immediate release of American citizen Peter Kassig and the other hostages taken by the IS terrorists.
Jihadi terrorism represents a threat to the international community as a whole. Spain is well aware of this through its own experiences. That is why it is essential to adopt a strategy based on a broad consensus among all the regional and international players that promotes peace, human rights and respect for human life.
The aim of the international community must be none other than wiping out the blight of international terrorism from the Middle East as soon as possible. Spain, which maintains strong ties of affection with the people of Iraq and Syria, accepts its share of responsibility in this arduous task.
