TRUCK STRIKE CALLED OFF

The proposed strike by the road hauliers association which was due to begin on Monday has been called off after an agreement has been reached with the Ministry of Finance.

The strike was due to a demand by the truckers that the ministry refund the so called “Health Cent” tax which had been put on fuel and deemed illegal by the European Union.

The main road hauliers associations signed an agreement on Thursday with the treasury, with the treasury now doing a u-turn on their policy, now agreeing to pay the due amount in full.

Apart from reducing traffic on the roads, the knock on effects of the strike would have meant stores and the hospitality industry would suffer, and thus their relevant associated bodies have issued a statement declaring their “satisfaction” that the strike has been called off.
