BEACH CHECK FOR ORIHUELA COSTA

A representative of the provincial coastal department has been visiting the Orihuela Costa this week, looking at various aspects of the coastline that have been raised as concerns by the municipal council.

One area where the focus was given is the lower access to the beach at Aguamarina, where the truck which accesses the beach to remove seaweed has been known to cause damage to both the walls alongside the beach, on account of the restricted width, and the wooden walkways that lead to the life guard station and chiringuito beach bar.

The walkways cannot be removed as they are a requirement of the Blue Flag accreditation, and so the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, is seeking permission to extend the concreted area and provide a more secure and wider access point for the vehicle, whilst still maintaining the necessary mobility needs of pedestrians.

The new coastal laws are also making the administration of the beaches easier in the future, whereas historically town and municipal councils would have to apply on an annual basis to permission to allow beach features such as sun beds, parasols and beach bars, the new legislation allows for the permission to be granted for a period of up to four years.

On account of this easing of time consuming administrative procedures, Orihuela council are in the process of submitting their next application before the end of this year which will allow the permission for the longest period possible, thus saving the time and money needed to do this for the next four year period.
