CALLS TO RENAME TORREVIEJA SPORTS CENTRE

The Los Verdes of Torrevieja are calling for the sports city to have the name Infanta Cristina removed from the title, after the Princess was charged in a tax fraud case.

Their aim is to have the centre free from any reference to an individual, simply carrying the descriptive name of “Palacio Municipal de Deportes”.

The initiative also form part of a proposal to prevent names being given to Torrevieja landmarks of people whose conduct and behaviour has not been noted for as exemplary, and as in this case, could be questioned for their alleged involvement in the commission of a criminal offense or corruption scandal, either by action or omission.

It follows on from the group demanding the withdrawal of the title of adopted son of Torrevieja given to the former President of Valencia, Francisco Camps, and the defence minister, Federico Trillo, as well as the calls to remove recognition given to the former mayor of the city, now a convicted criminal, Pedro Angel Hernández Mateo.

The Greens believe that municipalities should be take exemplary measures to help regenerate the political image, banishing from our streets, squares and public buildings the names of all of those that have not been highlighted as respecting the laws and serve with honesty, the citizens from the positions held and the institutions they represent.
