Eight streets are to be re named in Los Balcones after former Torrevimeja residents who excelled in the world of culture and education.

At a ceremony carried out in the Torrevieja Plenary hall last week the mayor, Eduardo Dolon, paid homage to the individuals in front of many of their family and friends.

Most of those honoured were former teachers and painters from the town. They were named as, teachers Parres Jaime Hernandez, Jose Manuel Gutierrez Rodriguez, Cyril Andreu Perez and Lorenzo Antonio Conesa and painters Jesus Baeza Hernández and José Mayol Pamies.

The two further selections were poet Leandro Baeza Perez and Maria Garrigós who died recently in a road accident.

The mayor, accompanied by Councillor Inmaculada Montesinos, handed over each of the street signs to family members of those honoured prior to posing with them in the traditional family photo.

He said that they were all individuals who had given so much to Torrevieja and as such their names will always be remembered in the city where they worked and lived.
