New pony Police chief and councillors

A lame pony abandoned on a piece of wasteland late last month has been saved by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, run by Sue and Rod Weeding in Rojales.

Local police called them to the scene on November 28, where they found the two-year-old pony riddled with worms and suffering leg deformations.

“The pony didn’t have an identification chip so unfortunately we cannot find out who abandoned him,” Sue said. He is now resident at the Rescue Centre.

“It appears his hooves have never been trimmed and he is lame on his left front leg and showing deformities in his joints. We will do x-rays on him to determine his problems and how we can help.”

New Rojales Policia Local chief Inaki Esparza visited the centre on December 2 with local councillors Lourdes Lopez, Marie Pierre Dubois and Derek Monks, who all praised the Weedings for their animal protection work.

“The new police chief was very impressed with what we were doing and said he’s happy to work with us because he considers it part of his job to protect animals from abuse,” Sue said.

“With local elections coming up next year, I urge anybody that cares about animal welfare in Spain to vote, and also to ask the parties about their animal welfare policies. It’s important that animal welfare becomes part of the agenda for the next election, as this is the only way we are going to progress things here in Spain.”

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre welcomes any donations and sponsorships to help support their important work. Every single cent donated to EHCRC or spent in their eight charity shops across the Alicante province goes towards the feeding and care of the more than 80 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre.

Large donated items such as furniture can be collected from your house and each store also offers a delivery service for large items purchased from the charity shops. EHCRC is also looking for volunteers to staff its shops for a few hours or days each week. Please contact the charity shop hotline on 652 021 980 for more information about furniture pick-ups and volunteering.

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre opens to the public on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. The centre is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. For more details and directions, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net.
