ANOTHER RECORD YEAR FOR ORGAN TRANSPLANTS

Spain is continuing to be a globally recognised centre for transplant surgery, with new figures released this week showing how 2014 was yet another record breaking year.

Having been the world leader in organ transplants since 1992, in total, there were 4,360 organ transplant operations conducted in Spanish hospitals last year, an increase of 5% on the 2013 figure.

A total of 2,678 kidney transplant operations were carried out in 2014, an increase of 5% on the previous year, as well as a 6% increase in heart transplants, with 265 operations in 2014.

The majority of donated organs came from patients who had died as a result of suffering a stroke, with donors from motor vehicle accidents reducing in line with the reduction in such incidents. Half of the donors are over the age of 60. In addition, over 15% of kidney donations came from live donors, with 423 people giving up their organ, a massive increase on the 61 living donor transplants a decade ago.

Despite these landmark figures, the donor rate is still extremely low, but far higher than other countries. In Spain, the donor rate now stands at 36 donors per million inhabitants, far higher than both France and the UK, where the figures are 26 and 21 respectively.
