Specialists at the Hospital Chiron warned of the additional risks of obesity among those affected by diabetes. They say that 38% of the world’s population is currently overweight and 14% obese, a condition in which the World Health Organization (WHO) said is of epidemic proportions with a higher prevalence among children. WHO said that in the United States it is the first cause of preventable death, ahead of diseases caused by smoking.

According to experts at the hospital, 72% of patients with weight problems that undergo bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery), cease to be diabetic.

Dr. Pedro Bretcha, a specialist in the field, explained that "being overweight carries many other disorders such as diabetes, sleep disorders, heart or anxiety problems." He said that there are many new and less invasive surgical techniques which are an improvement in the treatment of such disease and which minimize postoperative effects.
