Anne was also a talented artist

MOJACAR’S Coronation Street star Deidre Barlow (Anne Kirkbride) has died at her home in Manchester, aged 60. Anne had taken leave from the Cobbles of ‘Corrie’s’ Weatherfield, initially in September, with extended leave granted in October 2014, and headed to her Villa in Mojacar.

Coronation Street legend Anne died on Monday after battling a brain tumour, revealed by her husband David Beckett. Anne took a break from the soap after being given extended leave and was scheduled to return to Coronation Street.

However, Anne was forced to take a break, due to the brain tumour, that only husband David, her family and and a few close friends knew about.

Anne was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1993, which was successfully treated, and she returned to Coronation Street. Oldham born Anne had a Casa in Mojácar in the south east of Almería in Andalucia, southern Spain, of which in 2009, she fled her villa after bush fires hit the area.

TV chiefs always maintained that Anne would return to the cobbled streets of ‘Corrie’ – right up until the shock announcement of her death. Anne once said of her tiring schedules on Coronation Street: “At times, it is worse than being delayed at Alicante airport!." Husband David Beckett said she died peacefully in a Manchester hospital after a short illness. She is survived by her husband, her brother John, and his family.

Anne, who often took flights from Manchester to Elche-Alicante airport, had spoken of her tiring working hours on Coronation Street. "A lot of the time you are just hanging around for hours.

At times, it is worse than being delayed at Alicante airport for five hours. "Because there are no shops. I think of it like a flight. I’m like ‘OK, we are just getting to the gate. Now we’ve done the descent, now we’ve landed, now we’re taxiing’. "It’s just getting through it, counting the bloody minutes until you can go.”

Former Mojacar resident Andrew Greaves said: "I bumped into Anne Kirkbride a couple of times in Mojacar, when I lived there. "She had a place not far from me. Anne was always happy to chat."
