Three officers from the French security forces are patrolling alongside Spanish officers in major tourist areas in Madrid

As part of the "European Police Stations" Project, under the Prüm Treaty, three officers from the French security forces are patrolling alongside Spanish officers in major tourist areas in Madrid, while another two police officers from the Portuguese Segurança Pública will travel to the Torremolinos-Benalmádena Police Station to help Portuguese students who travel to these towns as part of their studies.

As in previous years and during the summer holidays, French and Portuguese police officers in full uniform and carrying their regulation weapons are joining citizen protection teams in Spain to offer comprehensive services to French and Portuguese tourists in their own language. Within the framework of this collaboration, 24 Spanish National Police officers will travel to various police stations in Portugal and France to offer assistance to Spanish tourists.

Three French and two Portuguese officers

The three French officers who have travelled to Spain are Spanish speakers and will provide their services from 27 March to 6 April at the Central Police Station in Madrid. Their duties will comprise foot or vehicle patrols, helping the victims of crime, preventing unlawful conduct and providing assistance when people wish to file an official report.

In turn, the two officers from the Portuguese Segurança Pública will travel to Spain in a police vehicle and wearing their own uniform from 20 March to 30 March to help Portuguese students travelling to Torremolinos and Benalmádena for their study trips.

The goal is to be on-hand for tourists and offer comprehensive citizen protection support from police officers who speak their own language and know the legal procedures of both countries. To do so, they will patrol areas that are highly popular with tourists. The joint patrols represent another step in international collaboration and police cooperation, foster improved services to the public and allow the concept of cross-border security to be consolidated.

"European Police Stations" initiative since 2008

The Spanish National Police has been involved in the "European Police Stations" initiative since 2008; an initiative that is also being supported by officers from other European countries, such as Italy, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. On this occasion, four officers from the Spanish National Police will travel to police stations in Lisbon and Braga from 1 April to 6 April, while approximately 20 others will support the services provided to Spanish tourists in various French cities – including Carcassonne, Nimes, Versailles, Avignon, and Marseille.

They will also provide services at Disney Land Paris on an intermittent basis between April and the end of the year.
